The Life of the Mother of God and Mary’s Invocations

Under different titles and visual interpretations, the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, is celebrated all over the Christian world as the mediator between Christ and humankind. Devotions to the Blessed Virgin are based on her life, miracles attributed to her, and Christian tradition and theology.

The Orthodox Church calendar celebrates around four hundred miracles and feasts related to Mary, many of them connected to times of political conflict such as the Mother of God Kazanskaya who is believed to have helped Russia repel the invading Polish army in 1612. There are five main types of Mother of God icons: Tenderness, Hodigitria, Sign, Intercessor, and Enthroned.

Many in Mexico venerate the Benevolent Mother and have bestowed on her over two hundred different titles related to her divine apparitions, life cycles, and miracles ascribed to her image, which have inspired the construction of numerous sanctuaries and pilgrimage sites.
